How to tell if an audio file has been MP3 encoded.
I put this page together to help others tell if an audio disc has been previously MP3 encoded. This is the only way that I know of to tell if a WAV file has been MP3 encoded. If there are other ways please email me.
I use Cool Edit Pro. to view the spectral wav form of an audio file.
First you must extract the WAV file from your source CD with the program of your choice, I use EAC (Exact Audio Copy).
Then open the WAV file with Cool Edit Pro.
When the file is open select Spectral View and reference the picture below.

The above picture is a spectral view of a WAV file that has not been MP3 encoded. A true WAV file's peaks will reach to the top of the spectrum.

The above picture is a spectral view of a WAV file that has been MP3 encoded at 96 kbps. It is clearly shown where the peaks are cut off at about 15,000 Hz.
